Couples
Making the decision to go to couples therapy is no easy task, and often times the decision is made at a point where our emotions are strong and we want to move towards a change and growth. My goal, when working with couples, is to provide a safe and sacred space where couples can speak their own truths, and take measured risks in moving towards a desired goal. My approach is a blend of structured/directive methods that enable couples to practice using tools to manage conflict, while also highlighting examples of in-session behavior that reflect movement towards a couples’ desired goal for their relationship. One of the most effective methods I have found, when working with couples, is in using the moment to support and guide individuals in finding the courage to practice taking small risks in relating to their partner differently in order to support the creation of deeper and more revealing relationship.
Sex Therapy
Sexuality is a core part of the human experience, and as such can be a source of great joy and connection as well as deep distress and suffering. Our sexual selves change throughout the course of the lifespan, being influenced by physiological changes, shifts in our relationships, as well as in how we change with experience as individuals, all of which can make navigating our sex lives a bit more confusing. It is my goal, as a sex positive therapist, to help my patients move towards a deeper understanding of themselves and to explore all facets of their sexuality in order to support the creation of change where possible.
My approach is warm yet challenging, directive while also lead by my patients concerns.
I am comfortable with, and respect, all sexual orientations and relationship structures, and strive to work from a sex positive framework based on health and defined goals.
In addition to being comfortable in addressing sexually related concerns, I am currently perusing certification as a registered sex therapist. What this means is that I am currently receiving additional supervision and extended training focused on sexuality and related concerns. This is important as most graduate programs in counseling only offer 1-2 classes in sexuality, thus leaving many therapists unprepared to treat more complex sexual and relational problems presented. When addressing sexual concerns I often utilize my extensive couples and mindfulness based training to provide a more holistic treatment for my patients to support movement towards a more self-led and enriching life.
Individuals
Coming to counseling for individual work can be a daunting choice to make filled with question about both the therapeutic process as well as the therapist you're working with. When providing services to individuals, be it adult or adolescence, my goal is to provide a sacred space to where my clients feel comfortable enough to show their true selves. Within this space, we work together to both identify your strengths and utilize those strengths in taking steps towards the ideal image you have for your goals in life. I tend to be a bit interactive in my sessions and facilitate a calm and supportive mood where your goals help to direct our work, and our weekly sessions.
Parenting
As we become parents, and start families of our own, our worlds begin to change dramatically from that of independence to one of provision and nurturance, caring and responsibility towards our children. When working with parents and children, my approach is one rooted in systemic thought with a “here-and-now” focus. I use present moment experiential methods, play therapy, psychoeducation, modeling and behavioral shaping to help unlock questions of development, while facilitating emotional attunment. My goal when working with families and children is to deepen parents understanding of behaviors seen in session, and those present in the home/school, and then work strategically and relationally to shape those behaviors in a way that help children flourish, empowering their parents while strengthening attachments.
